So, you’ve found a photographer whose work you love. Their photos feel like what you’ve been picturing, and now you’re wondering if they’re the right fit for your day. Before you go ahead and lock anything in, there are a few things it’s definitely worth asking.
Booking a wedding photographer is a big part of your day. They’ll be with you through some of the most personal and emotional moments, so you want to feel confident in who you’re choosing.
Here are a few key questions you should ask to help you get a clearer picture (no pun intended).
CAN WE SEE A FULL GALLERY?
Instagram is great for getting a feel for someone’s style, but it’s only ever the highlights. A few golden hour portraits or those big romantic moments are lovely, but they don’t show you what the whole day looked like from start to finish. That’s why it’s a good idea to ask to see a full wedding gallery, not just the curated bits.
Looking through a full gallery gives you a much clearer picture of how they shoot the entire day. You’ll see how they handle things like indoor ceremonies, darker venues, dancing in low light, or even unpredictable weather. It also shows how they capture the more natural, candid moments, like your mates having a laugh during the speeches or your family pulling you in for hugs.
It’s also worth checking how consistent the photos are. Do they keep the editing style the same all the way through? Are the group photos neat and well-lit? Does anything look rushed or messy?
Seeing a full gallery will help you feel more confident that what they show online matches what they actually deliver to couples. It’s one of the best ways to figure out if they’re the right fit for your day.
ARE YOU MORE HANDS-ON OR LAID-BACK ON THE DAY?
Every photographer has their own way of working. Some are more involved and will gently guide you through the day, while others prefer to stay in the background and just capture things as they happen. There’s no right or wrong, but it’s really helpful to know their approach so it lines up with what you’re after.
If you're someone who feels a bit awkward in front of the camera, you might want a photographer who gives you a bit of direction to help you relax. On the flip side, if you don’t want too much fuss or staging, someone with a more documentary style might be better.
HOW DO YOU HANDLE DIFFERENT LIGHTING AND SKIN TONES?
This one’s really important, especially if you or your partner has a darker skin tone, or if you’re an interracial couple. Lighting and editing can have a big impact on how you look in your photos, and not every photographer knows how to get it right across the board. I've put together a full blog post diving deeper into how I work with different lighting scenarios and skin tones - you can read it here.
You want someone who’s worked with a range of skin tones and knows how to make sure everyone looks good in every kind of light. Whether it’s golden hour, indoor ceremony lighting, or dancing under fairy lights, they should be confident in adapting to whatever the day brings.
If this matters to you, it’s completely okay to ask about their experience. They should be happy to talk you through how they approach things like lighting, camera settings and editing to make sure both of you feel like your best selves in the final gallery.
WHAT'S INCLUDED IN YOUR PRICING & PACKAGES?
Every photographer does things slightly differently, so it’s worth getting clear on exactly what’s included before you book. Ask how many hours of coverage you’ll get, whether there’ll be a second shooter, how many edited photos you can expect, and when you’ll get your gallery.
Some photographers send over a little sneak peek within a few days, others take a few weeks to deliver the full set. If you’re hoping for extras like an engagement photoshoot, printed albums or anything else, check if they’re part of the package or priced separately.
Having everything laid out from the start makes it easier to compare options and helps avoid any surprises later on.
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU'RE UNWELL OR SOMETHING UNEXPECTED HAPPENS ON OUR WEDDING DAY?
It’s not the most exciting thing to think about, but it’s a sensible question to ask. Life happens, and it’s good to know what the plan would be if your photographer couldn’t make it on your wedding day.
Ask if they have a backup photographer they trust or if they work with a second shooter who could step in. A proper plan shows they take your day seriously and want to make sure you’re covered no matter what.
It’s one of those things you’ll hopefully never need, but it’s always better to ask and feel reassured.
WHAT'S YOUR BOOKING PROCESS?
Before you make anything official, it’s a good idea to ask how the booking process works. Most photographers will ask for a deposit to secure your date, along with a contract that covers the details of what’s included.
It’s also worth checking when the final payment is due and whether the balance can be split into smaller instalments. The more transparent and organised they are at this stage, the more confident you’ll feel about everything that follows.
CAN WE READ SOME REVIEWS?
Definitely ask to see some reviews or testimonials. It’s one of the best ways to get a feel for what it’s really like to work with them. You’ll get a sense of how they are on the day, how well they communicate, and how their couples felt when they got their photos back.
Look out for things like how relaxed they made people feel, how organised they were, and whether they went the extra mile. If the reviews sound like the kind of experience you’re hoping for, that’s always a good sign.
HOW DO YOU HANDLE GROUP & FAMILY PHOTOS
These photos can take up more time than you’d expect if there isn’t a plan in place. It’s worth asking whether your photographer helps you put together a group shot list before the day and how they keep things running smoothly. I've written a full blog post on how I approach group and family photos, with tips to make the whole process as stress-free as possible - you can check it out here.
If you’ve got a big family, a few different group combos, or some slightly complicated dynamics, having someone who’s organised and calm makes a big difference. The last thing you want is to be standing around wondering who’s meant to be where.
Still have questions? Let's chat!
Choosing a photographer can feel like a bit of a minefield. There's a lot to think about, and even more to scroll through. Hopefully, this guide has helped make things a bit clearer and given you some useful questions to ask as you plan.
At the end of the day, this isn't just about pretty pictures - it's about having someone by your side who will make you feel comfortable, seen and completely yourself. That's why it's worth asking the deeper questions and making sure whoever you choose to photograph your wedding day is genuinely the right fit for you.
If you've got more questions, or you're reading this and thinking we might be a good match, I'd love to hear from you.
