Confetti is one of those moments that always brings plenty of energy to a wedding day. Everyone is together, there’s usually lots of laughing and cheering, and it can make for some brilliant photographs.
It doesn’t need to be complicated, but a little planning beforehand can make a big difference. From having enough confetti to checking what your venue allows, here are a few things worth thinking about before the day.
THE MORE THE BETTER
One thing couples sometimes underestimate is just how much confetti you need. Guests don’t always bring their own, so make sure there’s plenty to go around.
When it comes to confetti, more really is better. You want everyone to have a good handful so that when it’s thrown, there’s plenty in the air and around you. Having too much is rarely a problem, but having too little can make the moment disappear very quickly.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT CONFETTI
The type of confetti you choose can make a difference too. Biodegradable confetti or dried flower petals are both great options, and larger pieces and brighter colours tend to show up particularly well in photographs.
I would avoid anything particularly small or heavy. You want something that will stay in the air for a moment rather than disappearing almost as soon as it has been thrown.
Before buying anything, check what your venue allows as some will have restrictions on the type of confetti you can use.
CHECK WITH YOUR VENUE
Some venues have specific rules around confetti. They might only allow certain types, restrict it to particular areas, or not allow it at all. It’s always worth checking beforehand so there aren’t any surprises on the day.
If confetti is allowed, I can help work out the best place for it based on the venue, the light and where there’s enough space to get everyone together.
And if your venue doesn’t allow confetti, there are still plenty of great alternatives. Bubbles, ribbons and flags can all create a fun moment with your guests, or you could plan something later in the day such as a sparkler exit. They can look just as brilliant in photographs and still give you that celebratory moment with everyone around you.
LET ME ORGANISE EVERYONE
On the day, you don’t need to worry about arranging everybody. I’ll help get your guests into position, explain what we’re doing and let everyone know when to throw.
One of the biggest things I’ll ask everyone to do is throw the confetti upwards rather than directly at you. This gives it time to fall around you and usually looks much better than having a handful launched straight at your faces.
Once everyone is ready, all you need to do is walk through and enjoy it.
DON'T WORRY ABOUT POSING
You don’t need to plan what you’re going to do, practise a pose beforehand or worry about where you should be looking.
Some couples laugh their way through it. Some look at each other, share a kiss or do a dip in the middle of everyone. Sometimes someone gets a mouthful of confetti and everyone finds it hilarious. Those reactions are part of the moment.
There’s no right way to do it. Just enjoy what’s happening and I’ll capture it as it happens.
TAKE YOUR TIME AND ENJOY IT
When everyone starts cheering and throwing confetti, it can be tempting to rush through, but there’s no need.
Walk at a comfortable pace, stay close together and enjoy what’s happening around you. You can look at each other, laugh with your guests or just take everything in. I’ll take care of the photography while you enjoy the moment.
Like most things on a wedding day, the best confetti photographs usually happen when you’re not thinking too much about the photograph itself.
