If you’ve found yourself wondering, “are wedding delays normal?” or feeling anxious about your day running over schedule, you’re definitely not alone. Many couples look for reassurance around timelines, late ceremonies, travel between venues, speeches that go on for too long, or getting ready taking more time than expected.

My approach is calm, organised and adaptable. Even if your timeline shifts, you’ll still receive a beautiful, complete set of storytelling images without added stress or pressure.

Planning a wedding is a huge logistical task, and it’s completely natural to hope everything runs perfectly. But after years of photographing real weddings, here’s something I can confidently say: they rarely run exactly to the minute, and that’s absolutely okay.

Small delays are part of almost every wedding day. Whether it’s unexpected weather, traffic between venues, delays caused by suppliers running slightly behind, or the morning taking longer than planned, these moments are simply part of your story. Choosing a photographer who is comfortable with changing timelines and flexible coverage makes all the difference.

Here’s why you don’t need to panic when things go slightly off-script, and how I keep your photography flowing seamlessly, whatever the day brings.

WHEN THINGS RUN A LITTLE LATE

If the speeches run 20 minutes over, the last thing you want is your photographer tapping their watch.

Although my coverage is based on set packages, I always allow space for the natural flow of the day and small delays where possible, so you can stay fully present in the moment. If the day unfolds in a way that means you'd like a little extra coverage, we can easily discuss extending the time on the day.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED

If your day hits a snag, you haven’t “failed” at wedding planning, you’re just having a real wedding. Here are some of the most common things I see, and how you can plan for them:

The Morning Rush: Getting ready is often the biggest cause of delays. If you have a larger group getting ready and only one hair or makeup artist, things will naturally take longer.

My tip: Consider hiring a second artist, or setting your “ready by” time 45 minutes earlier than you think you’ll need.

Ceremony to Reception Transition: Travelling between venues often takes longer than Google Maps suggests. Guests moving between locations, parking, and settling in all add time.

We’re Only Human: Speeches often run long because people are speaking from the heart, and kids will always do their own thing. These unplanned moments often create the most genuine, candid photos.

EMBRACING THE BRITISH WEATHER

Rain on your wedding day isn’t a “ruined day”, it’s simply a different kind of beautiful. Some of the most atmospheric and romantic images happen in unexpected weather.

The Backup Plan: I always recommend discussing an indoor Plan B with your venue in advance.

How I’ll help: I’m constantly looking for light and good backdrops. Whether that’s a hallway with beautiful window light or a covered outdoor space, we’ll find a setting that works. You stay comfortable, and the photos still look incredible.

WHY THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF COVERAGE MATTERS

If you want to take "clock-watching" off your to-do list completely, full-day wedding coverage is often the easiest option.

When I'm there for the whole day, a lot of that pressure simply disappears. You don’t have to worry about whether something happened “in time” for photos. I’m there until the story feels complete. It gives you space to enjoy your day, eat your food, hug your people, and stay present without checking the clock.

MY APPROACH

My photography style is rooted in candid storytelling. We don’t need a rigid schedule to create meaningful images. In fact, I work best when the day unfolds naturally and I can document real moments as they happen.

My role is to be the calmest person in the room. If the schedule shifts, I adapt. However your timeline unfolds, we’ll make sure the moments that matter most to you are beautifully captured, even if they happen a little later than planned.

Choosing a wedding photographer often starts with the portfolio, but experience handling a day that doesn’t run perfectly to plan is just as important. An adaptable photographer acts as a buffer between you and the stress of delays, so you can stay focused on celebrating.

Because my style is documentary-led, I don’t need you to be posing at a specific time. My goal is to capture the authentic flow of your day. If speeches start later than expected, I’m not worried. I’ll be finding the best angles to document the laughter, tears, and connection as they happen.

MANAGING YOUR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY TIMELINE

If you're planning your timeline, here are a few ways we can work together to make sure we capture what matters most, even if the day doesn't go exactly to plan.

Planning Ahead: Before the wedding, we'll go through your plans together so I know what's most important to you. That way, if the timings change, I already know where to focus first.

Group & Family Photos: We'll create a prioritised list of group photos in advance. If we're running behind, I'll move through them efficiently so you're not away from your guests any longer than necessary.

Staying Flexible: If the day takes an unexpected turn, we'll simply adapt. Whether that means changing the order of events, finding another location for portraits or making the most of the time we have, my focus is always on capturing the moments that matter most rather than sticking rigidly to the original timeline.

Venue Backup Locations: I always scout your venue for strong photo locations. Whether that's a staircase, a library, a courtyard or a barn, we'll always have a good option if the weather changes or a planned location isn't available.

Ready to plan your stress-free wedding photography?

Your wedding is a celebration, not a production. Delays are normal, and they don’t define the experience.

The truth is, no wedding runs exactly to plan and that's completely normal. The moments you'll remember most are rarely the ones that were scheduled. My job is to adapt as the day unfolds, so you can stay present and enjoy it, knowing those moments are being captured naturally.
